The treatment of depression in MDD (major depressive disorder) with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is ‘on-label’.
Medical literature shows the efficacy of TMS for many other conditions including bipolar disease, PTSD, ADD, autism, speech recovery post stroke, tinnitus, migraine, chronic pain states, and reduction of persistent auditory hallucinations.
When is TMS most appropriate?
The American Psychiatric Association’s 2010 guidelines for the treatment of depression recommend consideration of the use of TMS after the failure of one or more medication trials.
The CANMAT (Canadian Mood and Anxiety Treatment Protocol) also recommends TMS as a treatment alternative for those who fail to respond to medication or who find side effects uncomfortable or intolerable.
